Are creativity and mental illness linked? Or is it just a coincidence that strikingly many artists struggle with depression and other mental disorders?

My old psychologist believes creativity and depression are interrelated. He had seen it on several of his patients, including me. And I completely agree with my old psychologist. I have always believed that creativity and depression are interrelated.
